The longest chains

Expert math crossword

An expert math crossword is the densest board here: larger numbers, more blanks, and at least two rounds where no equation gives you a cell for free.

A sample Expert grid, 11×11, with the blanks left empty. Play deals a new puzzle. It is not today's daily.

Expert uses all four operations. Numbers run from 1 to 120. The grid can reach 11 by 11 with 13 to 15 equations, and about 60 percent of the number cells are blank, the highest share of the four levels. One or two equations are the longer kind, A operator B operator C = D, with multiplication and division before addition and subtraction. Each step stays a positive whole number.

You will be stuck on single blanks at least twice, so you compare candidates across a crossing. The chain runs at least six rounds. If a tile is the only one that fits a cell in both directions, or the only cell a remaining tile can sit in, that placement is forced. Nothing here requires a guess.

The scoring target is twelve seconds per blank, about three minutes and twenty seconds. A fast daily win with no hints is the top score in the game, 320 points. Each hint moves a real bank tile and takes 10 percent off.

Expert is for adults who want a long arithmetic puzzle rather than a warm-up, once Hard feels routine. The guide solves an Easy board step by step, then shows the candidate technique these boards depend on.
