Medium math crossword
A medium math crossword keeps plus and minus, adds multiplication, and is the first level where you sometimes compare tiles instead of reading an answer off one equation.
Medium uses addition, subtraction and multiplication. Numbers run from 1 to 99, so a product gets large quickly. The grid can grow to 11 by 11 and holds 11 to 13 equations. About half of the number cells are blanks. Equations stay the short kind, A operator B = C. Division does not appear, and neither does a line with two operators.
Easy can be finished by always filling the equation that has one blank left. Medium is built so that, at least once, every remaining equation has two or more blanks. That is the round where you compare candidates.
Pick a blank that sits in two equations. List the tiles that could make the across equation true, then the tiles that could make the down equation true. Only a number on both lists can go in the cell. A tile that fits only one blank on the board goes there. A puzzle that would need a guess is thrown out.
The scoring target is seven seconds per blank, about a minute and twenty seconds on a usual board. A signed-in daily win starts from 20 points before the speed bonus. Hard adds division and the first longer equations, with multiplication and division before addition and subtraction.
